The problem, as a shopkeeper meets it
Anyone can printyour QR code.
A QR code is a picture. Anyone with a printer can make one, and anyone with tape can put it over yours.
Today a customer pays a merchant by mobile money in one of two ways. They type a number read off a wall, which invites a mistyped digit and a transfer that cannot be recalled. Or they scan a printed code, which invites something worse: a code that is not the shop’s.
Both failures land on the merchant. The customer paid someone. They have a confirmation SMS. What they do not have is any way to prove which of the two of you it went to, and the argument happens at your counter, in front of a queue.
The fix is not a better sticker. It is a sticker that can prove it is the real one. That is the whole product.
A printed QR code

The customer taps
They hold their phone near the tag on your counter. A web page opens. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign into.

They check who you are
Your shop name, your trading name and your merchant code, in large type, with a green outline confirming the tag proved itself. If any of it is wrong, this is where they stop.

The amount and the mobile money number they want debited, on one screen with one keypad. The network is worked out from the number.

The prompt arrives on their handset and they enter their PIN. The page flips to a receipt the moment it settles, and an SMS goes to both of you.

Why it cannot be copied
Watch the tagchange its ownsignature.
Every time a phone comes near the tag, the chip does arithmetic. It increments a counter that has no way to go backwards, encrypts that counter along with its own serial number, and signs the result with a key that exists only inside the silicon.
Which means a captured tap URL is not a copy of the tag. It is a photograph of one moment, and the moment has passed.

Where we are starting
Counters with a queueand a fixed till.
The pilot is aimed at the businesses where the tag has somewhere permanent to live and the queue makes speed worth paying for.
Pharmacies
A fixed counter, repeat customers, and a queue that moves faster when nobody is typing a number off the wall.
Filling stations
The attendant is at the pump, not the till. A tag on the pump housing is the payment terminal.
Food and provisions
Small tickets, high volume, and an owner who knows precisely how much an argument at the counter costs.
Roughly seven thousand pharmacies and filling stations operate in Ghana, which is the number the pilot is sized against. It is a beachhead, not a ceiling.
What a merchant actually gets
Four surfaces,one payment.
No terminal to buy, no card reader, nothing to plug in. What you do get is a screen that proves who you are, a message in your pocket, a table that reconciles, and a sheet you can print.
Every tap on your tag is logged too, accepted or refused, with the reason. If somebody is probing your counter, it is written down.

Both parties, every payment. The notification, deliberately not the record of truth: a network can delay a message.

We would rather show an empty box here than a number we have not committed to. A pilot merchant will be told the exact terms in writing before anything is signed.
Status
Where this actually is
Tap2MoMo is a working system in pilot preparation, not a service you can switch on today. It holds no Bank of Ghana payment service provider authorisation, and the licensing route is a question we are working through rather than one we have settled.
A merchant joining now is joining a pilot, with the involvement and the uncertainty that implies. We would rather you knew that from the homepage than found out after signing something.
